We hope that you are settling into your new remote learning environment. Even as you are adjusting to this “new normal” for this semester, you may have questions about fall 2020 study abroad.

At present, we are planning on programs running as usual. However, as we’ve learned this semester, things can change very quickly. For that reason, we request that you take the following steps to prepare for the fall semester:

No Longer Planning to Study Abroad?

If you are receiving this message, the Office of International and Off-Campus Education still believes that you plan to study abroad in the fall. If you no longer plan on going abroad, please return to your study abroad portal to withdraw your application or reply to this email to let us know. Please also withdraw your application from your affiliated study abroad program if you have begun one.

You will register for classes and select housing per the normal processes. After you have followed the preceding steps, no further action will be required.

Still Intend to Study Abroad?

If you have been approved/accepted to your program in the Lafayette portal and intend to participate, choose “commit” to signal to us that you intend to study abroad.

If you have not yet been approved/accepted to your program and intend to study abroad pending acceptance/approval, you do not need to take additional steps at this time. However, once you learn of your program’s admissions decision, please let us know so that we can move your application into the next phase of the process.

Given the present uncertainty related to travel and program operations, it is possible that you will not be able to participate in study abroad this fall. For that reason, you have the option to register for on-campus fall semester classes and select 2020-21 College housing through the established processes occurring this spring.

If you do register for on-campus fall semester classes and housing and remain enrolled in study abroad, please keep the following in mind:

  • Once you have finalized your plans (to go abroad or stay on campus), please immediately withdraw from on-campus courses and housing or from study abroad, as the case may be.
  • If you remain enrolled in both on-campus and study abroad options two weeks prior to your program start date, or by July 31, whichever is earlier, we will assume that you plan on going abroad, and you will automatically be removed from on-campus activities.

In the meantime, we have developed an FAQ page related to COVID-19 on our website. There you will find important information about the decision-making process on whether programs run, timing of decisions, etc.

Finally, in anticipation of your semester abroad, we’re developing an online solution to the course approval process and also an online pre-departure orientation. More on that will follow in future emails.

Please feel free to be in touch with any questions or concerns.

Be well,

International and Off-Campus Education
