Subject: Update on Spring 2020 Refunds Related to COVID-19

Dear Students and Families:

I hope this message reaches you well. By now, you have probably seen President Byerly’s message to the community regarding partial refunds for room and board costs. This update addresses how these policies affect study abroad.

As you know, students on affiliated study abroad programs are charged their program’s room, board, and other non-tuition fees and Lafayette College tuition, regardless of the cost of their program’s tuition, except in cases where the program’s tuition is higher, in which case students are charged the higher amount.

Room, Board, and Other Non-Tuition Costs

Students on affiliated study abroad programs will receive the amount of any refund for non-tuition costs allocated by their study abroad programs. In some cases, programs are returning the refund to the College, and we will process the refund and credit your student account. In other cases, programs are sending partial refunds directly to students. If you have any questions about the amount of your program’s refund, the method by which it will be returned to you, or the timeline for sending the refund, please reach out directly to your program. Because you did not pay Lafayette room and board, the College room and board refund program does not apply to you.

Tuition

Students are earning a full semester’s worth of Lafayette College credit through distance learning. While the delivery of course content is not how anyone imagined it, it is parallel to the experience of our on-campus students. The study abroad tuition refund policy aligns with the College’s. Students should not expect a refund for tuition nor for the difference in the cost of tuition between their host program and Lafayette.

We hope that this message provides some clarification. Please feel free to get in touch with any questions or concerns.
